Michigan has a lot of underground natural gas storage

Types of underground natural gas storage facilities

In the wake of the recent catastrophic natural gas leak in California, the state of Michigan has come out and stated concern about its own underground gas infrastructure.

The gas leak in California — north of Los Angeles in Aliso Canyon — has been an ongoing disaster since December, and authorities are now saying that it could take many more months to stop the leak and end the crisis.

It turns out that the state of Michigan has more active underground natural gas storage reservoirs similar to the type currently leaking in California than any other U.S. state.

And not only does Michigan have a lot of underground natural gas wells and lines, but some of the state’s aging infrastructure is more than 70 years old. The leak in CA is reportedly from infrastructure that is 61 years old.

Gas leaks bring multiple concerns

Not only do massive gas leaks like the one in Aliso Canyon — and the potential leaks like Michigan is attempting guard against — cause immediate emergency issues like evacuation and illness, but severe leaks can also cause environmental problems that reach a lot farther than the immediate vicinity.

Experts say that the current leak in CA is producing the same daily global warming impact is the same as driving 4.5 million cars.
